Every category from bed linens and mattresses to beauty and fashion has been tackled by direct-to-consumer

Every category from bed linens and mattresses to beauty and fashion has been tackled by direct-to-consumer brands in the last few years. And now, your kitchen is next. Cookware companies are making it easy to source high quality knives, pots and pants and other essential cooking and baking utensils at affordable prices. Here are six brands doing it right. We talked to their founders to get the scoop and some cooking tips along the way. Caraway’s four-piece, non-toxic, non-stick set of ceramic pots and pans ($395) is as durable, easy-to-clean and practical as it is adorable. The sets, which come in a rainbow of hues from sage green to navy, also come with magnetic pan racks and a canvas lid holder to make storage a cinch. Caraway founder Jordan Nathan created the brand after searching without success for a non-PTFE or Teflon-coated product. “Most cookware is overpriced, the shopping experience is confusing with so many different sized pans and materials and everything looks exactly the same, not to mention the hassle of storing a 16+ piece set,” says Nathan. “Which is why our sets come with a unique storage system that allows users to best organize their cookware and minimize the...

Tool Maker Loses Lawsuit For Not Violating Another Company’s Patents

Never. We’ve done our best to eliminate all methods of teaching that would instill in children the idea that their choices and actions have consequences. We seem to disagree with where the logic has gone off the rails here. I believe the logic behind the liability in this case is rock solid – seriously, have you *seen* how effective the sawstop is? Do you know how common lost fingers are? My opinion is that the system goes off the rails at the point where it gives a flat monopoly protection with no exceptions where something is crucial to the public good. That is assuming, of course, that the monopoly should be granted at all in the first place. I agree with what other commenters have said about this being an unusually non-abusive patent, but even in this case I think things would be much the same even if there were no patents – sawstop would have still invented their safety device, and still have started selling high end saws based on it, they just would have gone straight to manufacturing their own and not wasted time trying to license the technology first. As for Sawstop lauding this court decision, my guess is that whoever’s behind it has an honest c...

Royal hacks: What the Queen, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle carry inside their handbags

Queen Elizabeth is rarely seen without her trusty handbag by her side — she even uses it to send some secret signals. Her Majesty has been wearing the same style of purse for more than 50 years, made by British luxury label Launer. Both Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, always carry a clutch on royal engagements and, usually, these bags are much smaller than those favoured by the monarch. But the one thing all royal ladies have in common is the skill of packing just the essentials without being weighed down by bulky extras. In this week’s Royal Hacks – 9Honey’s new series – we take a look inside the handbags of royal ladies to see just what they include. It’s something us regular women can copy, even if we don’t have the same budget the Queen, Kate and Meghan have to spend on their accessories. The Queen’s handbag contains everything one may need when meeting the public, while Kate is said to carry just four items in her clutch, which makes sense considering how small they are. While Her Majesty prefers Launer, Kate and Meghan change up their looks with handbags by some of the world’s biggest fashion houses, inc...

While the sky-high prices fetched by some vintage guitars regularly hog the headlines, if you’re a tone hound, a vintage amp is every bit as desirable. The good news is that hardly any of them cost the eye-watering prices commanded by the best vintage guitars. The bad news is that (1) they can be hard to fix when they go wrong and (2) you need to be careful what you buy. A faulty old guitar will just play like a plank and probably sound awful, but a faulty old amp can kill you. If the amp comes with a frayed mains cable or a broken plug, if it makes strange noises—other than from your playing!—get it looked at by an amp specialist. Remember that inside, its components will be ancient, and they deteriorate with age. Also, it was made at a time when safety standards were far less strict, so never take risks with an old amp. Thoroughly put off the whole idea? I hope not, because a well-maintained old tube amp can be a treasure house of tone—and all the better for its small size and relatively low output. A small vintage guitar combo will be ideal for recording and practice, offering supreme tone and bearable volume. While we’re talking about tone, remember that ‘50s or early-’60s a...

LVMH, Kering and More Donate Billions of Dollars in Fight Against Coronavirus

As the deadly coronavirus continues to spread, a number of luxury conglomerates and big-name retailers are collectively donating billions of dollars to help local governments and charitable organizations combat the illness. Rivals LVMH Moët Hennessy and Kering as well as China-based firms like sportswear manufacturer Anta and e-commerce behemoth Alibaba were among the companies that recently made generous contributions toward supplies, support and research. Officials have confirmed five cases in the United States and roughly 4,500 around the world, leading to more than 100 fatalities. Yesterday, LVMH — parent company of Fendi, Celine and Christian Dior — pledged 1 million Chinese RMB ($144,000) to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to assist with a medical supplies shortage in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in China, according to a Chinese-language statement that FN translated. FN is waiting for confirmation of the exact amount because other media reports have suggested that LVMH made a 16 million RMB ($2.3 million) donation. The multinational conglomerate, which previously contributed toward the Notre Dame Cathedral’s restoration as well as battling wildfires in the Amazon ...

Nova Southeastern launches campus card loyalty program

Nova Southeastern launched a brand new campus card loyalty program this month that rewards students when they use their SharkCard student ID to make purchases. In addition to rewarding the use of its campus card, NSU’s loyalty program is also seeking to improve student engagement on campus by incentivizing attendance and participation in university events. As reported by NSU’s student publication, The Current, the the university’s card services office is behind the launch of SharkCard Rewards. The loyalty program rewards all NSU students, whether commuter, online, regional campus or main campus students, when they use their SharkCard to make purchases at designated locations or attend university events. The SharkCard Rewards program has been in the testing stage since last summer and is now fully operational. ShardCard Services is also fielding student feedback on the program regarding what students would like to see from the program in the future. The reward program leverages the SharkCard’s declining balance funds, and is open to any student on an opt-in basis. Students simply load money onto their card through CBORD’s GET app or online with their university credentials. Stude...
